subnet ownership

you can figure out who owns an ip subrange by issuing the following command from unix:

whois -h whois.arin.net $ip_addr

example:

$ ping google.com
PING google.com (216.239.57.99) from 192.168.1.102 : 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 216.239.57.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=238 time=148.632 msec

--- google.com ping statistics ---
1 packets transmitted, 1 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/mdev = 148.632/148.632/148.632/0.000 ms
[mike@localhost mike]$ whois -h whois.arin.net 216.239.57.99
